Ceramic Colors
Precious Metal Compounds for Ceramic Colors
Precious metals are commonly used in everyday household products. Among these are silver-plated mirrors, electronic components for the computer and telecommunication technologies, etc.
For decorative coating of glassware, china and pottery, "Ceramic Colors" are needed. These highly complex solutions, suspensions, or pastes are applied to the objects to be decorated. Finally, the colors are dried and then fired for permanence.
This type of coating results in beautiful, durable, and bright colors. Typical examples are gold-coated rims of glasses and plates, ruby decoration of china of the highest quality, or tiles with a variety of black designs.
Compounds of precious metals - mainly of gold (Au), and of the platinum group metals (PGM's) platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), rhodium (Rh), and ruthenium (Ru) - are often components of ceramic colors. It is the firing that leads to the desired final effects (e.g. the metal deposition).
Our Chemical Products Business Unit manufactures suitable compounds and solutions as core products, which serve to manufacture ceramic colors:
Gold (Au)
is the key precious metal for ceramic colors. According to application, e.g. matte burnished gold, bright liquid gold, and luster colors can be distinguished, most of which are based on organogold compounds (e.g. gold resinates).
Not only bright golden finishes can be achieved, but also purple and ruby ones depending on the particle size, on the composition of the solution, and on the method of deposition.
Silver (Ag)
does not play any important part in ceramic coatings, because it easily tarnishes on exposure to air. But Ag additions lead to a greenish shade of gold deposits.
Rhodium (Rh)
can be added to gold preparations to obtain more homogeneous deposits.
Palladium (Pd) and Platinum (Pt)
Admixtures of palladium (Pd) and platinum (Pt) lead to whitish hues of gold deposits.
Ruthenium (Ru) and Iridium (Ir)
Ruthenium (Ru) and iridium (Ir) play a special part e.g. in coloring tiles with jet-black patterns.
Starting materials from Heraeus for manufacturing ceramic colors are e.g.:
 Hydrogen tetrachloroaurate(III) hydrate, H[AuCl4]•nH2O
 Silver(I) nitrate, AgNO3
 Dihydrogen hexachloroplatinate(IV) hydrate, H2[PtCl6]•nH2O ("CPA")
 Palladium(II) chloride, PdCl2
 Rhodium(III) chloride hydrate, RhCl3•nH2O
 Ruthenium(III) chloride hydrate, RuCl3•nH2O
 Dihydrogen hexachloroiridate(IV) hydrate, H2[IrCl6]•nH2O
• Osmium(III) chloride hydrate, OsCl3•nH2O
